Missions Isn’t Always a Plane Ticket

I’m in a unique season of life. I have the opportunity to vocationally serve this small ministry, Untether Life — but I also drive for Lyft a few hours a day, a few days a week.

And honestly? Both are ministries.

On any given shift, I pick up 7–10 riders. That means 7–10 opportunities to listen, to encourage, to pray, and sometimes to share the gospel. Every person who gets into my car matters. Every story matters. And I’ve learned that if I stay aware, God is always moving.

Recently, I picked up a young woman in Norfolk and drove her home to Portsmouth. As I prayed quietly for her while we drove, I felt something different in the atmosphere of the car, so I prayed that the Lord would provide a way.

As we approached the Downtown Tunnel, she sighed and said, “I just can’t figure out what this word I’m reading means at all.” I asked her what word.

“Discernment.”

THANK YOU, LORD! Here was my opening!!  The conversation opened up, and she asked if she could "vent." I said, of course, as she proceeded to confess her struggles, her desires for more, and her confusion at life in general. She mentions that she's praying and “doing everything she knew to do.”

So I asked her, “When you’re praying, who are you praying to?”

“God,” she said.

“But who is God to you?”

She paused. “That’s a good question… I don’t think I know.”

So I asked her something simple: “Have you ever heard the gospel of Jesus Christ?”

She shook her head, and I asked her if I could tell her about it, and proceeded to share the good news of Jesus with her. Here was someone born and raised in my area who had never heard the gospel, and right there, in a Lyft ride, I got to share the good news of Jesus.

We don’t have to go far to find a mission field. We are walking through one every single day. Missions isn’t just about crossing borders—it’s about seeing people. It’s a daily decision to pursue the heart of God and participate in the Great Commission—to make disciples of Jesus wherever we are. But here’s the beautiful part:

When we do step into regional and international missions—like serving in Eastern Kentucky or Guatemala—it doesn’t replace local mission… it expands it. It stretches our perspective, deepens our compassion, and reminds us that the gospel is for everyone, everywhere.

And then, when we come home, we see differently. We notice more, we listen better, and we live with greater intention.

Missions across the street and missions across the world are not separate callings—they are part of the same story God is writing through His people.

You don’t have to get on a plane to live on mission - but when you do, it might just change how you live every day after.

This is the heart behind Untether Life.

We don’t just talk about missions—we create opportunities to live it. Locally, regionally, and internationally.
